THE SEARCH FOR THE 2008 UNSUNG HERO BEGINS
ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA - FIRSTCARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL BANK is on the search for persons in Grenada and other Caribbean countries who are helping to improve the lives of others in their communities through the 2008 Unsung Heroes Programme, which was launched in Grenada at the branches of FirstCaribbean in St.George’s, Grand Anse, Grenville and in Carriacou on Wednesday 30th April. “This is a programme that is dear to my heart. It is a very good thing to hear about the kind of work that is being undertaken by these people in their communities on their own time with their own resources, just to better the conditions of others, said Country Manager Rickey Charles. Speaking on the GBN Mornings programme, Mr. Charles officially launched the programme and called on Grenadians to play their part in recognizing persons who were eligible to participate in the programme. Mr. Charles noted that that nominees can be champions of small or large causes, popular or esoteric causes – the key commonality is their shared determination to make the world a little more pleasant, a little better than it was before. “We all know someone who is going out of their way to help others, to improve the community without attention and without reward. We at FirstCaribbean encourage you to fill out a form, call the bank or simply find a way to recommend that person for the Unsung Heroes Programme” he said. Forms for the programme are available at all branches of FirstCaribbean International Bank and, for the first time Food Fair Supermarkets are also partnering with the bank to make forms available to their customers. “We are making every opportunity available for you and members of the public to recommend persons who they think meet the requirements of an unsung hero in their neighborhood, their village or their community, All we want to do is help them do what they are doing,’ Mr. Charles said. He pointed out that nominees must be individuals who are dedicated “beyond the ordinary” toward social development, must be willing to have their cause profiled in the local and regional media, the individual must not currently have a high media profile, they must be a Caribbean citizen or be resident in the Caribbean for at least five years, they or the cause must not be political and it must not be the promotion of a religious movement. The Country Manager for FirstCaribbean said the bank is choosing a cadre of independent persons to judge the local competition, the winner of which will be among regional entries for the FirstCaribbean’s regional Unsung Hero.
