GRENADIANS UP IN ARMS OVER WATERFRONT COTTAGES
British millionaire developer, Peter DeSavary, has sought to allay the fears of Grenadians who have expressed concern about his plans to build cottages along the waterfront in the capital. The developer has insisted that only a small area of the Lagoon will be used to construct the cottages, which are part of a multimillion dollar Marina project. The project also includes a five-star hotel and residential areas. He was responding to objections by a local pressure group, Citizens in Defence of Grenada's Lands and Heritage, which said the project will interfere with the aesthetics of the area and will obstruct the view of the Caribbean Sea from the St. George's Lagoon. Police tore down protest banners erected by the group on DeSavary's property. The lobby group has been circulating a petition seeking support for its cause. Reprinted from radioja.com

This local pressure group is made up of persons that I can count on the fingers of my two hands and interestingly, most of them are known to be heavily anti-government. The vast majority of Grenadians - the silent majority - do not have a problem with the developer and his project. Do we want development in Grenada? Well, there has to be a cost!!! We can't have development and yet everything still remains the same. PDS also said that he will not proceed with the building of cottages on the lagoon if it is not the will of the Grenadian people - not just the few that are making noise and purport to speak on behalf of 'WE, the people."

As a Grenadian living abroad, I would have to agree with the protestors. I believe that this is too much development for the country, and will not enhance it. Grenada should be developed by Grenadians, the infiltraon of too many foreigners and their "bright ideas" will lead to overdevelopment...and the country will not be the same... I'm not adverse to change that will better the country and enrich it's people, but when it infringes on the pristiness of my country, when people are up in arms over it, when it devalues what the country is recognized for: which is a country that is seeped in history, tradition, religon, rich in culture, naturalism, and a pure sense of goodness, wholesomeness, then I have to say no to the changes...Yes we want ever increasing tourism, and a steady economy, but at what price? Other people having more say and rights than the Grenadians to whom the country finally belongs? Keith Mitchell also needs to stop selling of the country piece by piece to foreigners, before once again our country isn't ours but in the hands of other people... The whole point is that Grenadians should decide, and not some already rich billonaire tycoon, seeking to make another fast buck, to add to his already ballooning fortune.
