OFF AND RUNNING
Grenada is now in full election mode with the country's Parliament set to be dissolved today to pave the way for general elections on 8 July. The ruling New National Party of Prime Minister Keith Mitchell will be seeking to secure an unprecedented fourth straight term in office. The main opposition National Democratic Congress led by lawyer Tillman Thomas is hoping to overturn a one-seat defeat at the last election. Some pundits had expected a date later in the year but not Thomas. "We expected the election to be called early in July based on how we saw the momentum with the campaigning going so we're not really taken by surprise. We have been preparing, we've been ding the organizing on the ground ... getting our constituencies ready and we are ready to get involved in this electoral process," said Mr. Thomas. He said he expected the economy and good governance to be key issues in the campaign, which has been underway unofficially for months. Nomination Day has been set for June 18. In announcing the date at a rally on Sunday night, Prime Minister Mitchell urged Grenadians to protect the peace, stability and prosperity of the country.
