Costa Rica fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 away to tiny Grenada on Saturday in a nervy start to their bid to reach a third straight World Cup.
An embarrassing result in the first leg of a CONCACAF second preliminary round tie extended the Ticos' current winless run to 14 games.
Patrick Modeste gave the "Spice Boyz" a 20th-minute lead at the National Stadium in St George's and Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts added a second seven minutes later.
Costa Rica, one of 12 teams to receive a bye to the second preliminary round, pulled one back through Armando Alonso three minutes before halftime.
Victor Nunez levelled in the 75th minute after the hosts had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Ricky Charles after the break.
The draw will increase pressure on Costa Rica coach Hernan Medford, whose team's last win in a full international was against Chile a year ago.
