GRENADA:- Twenty-one year old Afy Fletcher of La Fillette, St. Andrew’s, a member of the West Indies Women cricket team currently on a tour of Ireland, has played a pivotal role in assisting the Windies team to pull off a sensational six-wicket victory over Ireland in their third One Day International (ODI) played at Malahide, Dublin on June 29,2008. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Ireland Women were able to amass a total of 163 runs for 9 wickets in their allotted 50 overs, translating into a run rate of 3.26 runs per over. C. Shillington of Ireland top scored with 54 runs and C. Joyce contributed a useful 38 runs with the bat. Grenada’s Afy Fletcher was the peak of the West Indian bowlers, bagging a total of 4 wickets in her 9 over spell. The right-arm off break bowler was able to bowl 2 maiden overs and concede only 22 runs in her 9 over spell, translating into an impressive economy rate of 2.44 runs per over. A Mohammad also picked up 3 wickets in her 10 over spell for the West Indies, conceding 24 runs in the process. Chasing 164 for victory, the West Indies Women were able to belt the ball all over the field, reaching the target in only 35.5 overs, loosing only 4 wickets in the process. S Taylor, who opened the batting for the Windies, was not out when the winning run was scored and contributed a match winning 66 runs which included five 4s. C Taitt also contributed 38 runs with the bat before she was run out by Wicket keeper Carroll. The West Indies Women have won the 3 match series 2-0.
