PRIME MINISTER TILLMAN THOMAS VISITS RGPF
Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon Tillman Thomas this morning met with the senior ranks of the Royal Grenada Police Force, inclusive of divisional commanders and departmental heads. It was the first opportunity for Prime Minister Thomas to interact with the upper tier of the Force since taking the oath of Office on July 10th 2008. During a one hour session at the S.S.U. base at Point Saline, Prime Minister Thomas was introduced by Commissioner of Police Mr. Winston James, who outlined the importance of the Prime Minister’s visit at this time of transition. In his address to the Officers the Prime Minster affirmed his commitment to the independence of the various institutions of the State, such as the Royal Grenada Police Force. He emphasized the importance of respecting and strengthening these institutions and impressed on the Officers to be loyal to the institution they serve and not to any individual and/or political organization. Political transition is an integral part of the democratic process but our Institutions of State should not be affected by this, the Prime Minister stated. As Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Mr. Thomas pledged his fullest support to the Force and to the continued growth and development of the Institution. The effectiveness of the Force in controlling and maintaining law and order is critical to the country’s development, said the Prime Minister. Officers took the opportunity to congratulate the Prime Minister on his elevation to the Office, made suggestions and raised a number of issues and concerns. Among the issues raised were plans for improved operational facilities for the Police Head Quarters, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Drug Squad. The urgent need to secure a forensic laboratory and related resources, and to strengthen the operational response of the Coast Guard was brought forward. The Officers also impressed on the Prime Minister to explore the possibility of securing retirement benefits for persons who would have joined the Force after 1983. Prime Minister Thomas was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Miss Larna Mc Phail from the Prime Minister Office Also attending the meeting were Deputies Commissioner Charles and Redhead and ACP Smith Roberts.
