Minister of State responsible for Culture, Sen. Hon. Arly Gill has confirmed that Monday August 4th 2008 will continue to be a public holiday despite emphasis on August 1st as Emancipation day. Minister Gill says while August 1 is commemorated ad Emancipation Day, there is no change to the public holiday on Monday August 4, 2008. “We want to ensure that Emancipation day is given the attention and importance it deserves. We hope all Grenadians will reflect our African heritage on August 1,” He said. The Minister said the mode of dress must reflect our African heritage. Emancipation Day is the celebration of the abolishment of slavery and is celebrated as a public holiday in various countries at different times. This celebration is in remembrance of the full freedom of slaves from plantations and masters and the gaining of personal autonomy.
