2008 CARNIVAL AWARDS
SONG OF THE YEAR “Little Wine” by Brother B, a very early release that stood the test of time, by an Artiste who represents the future of Grenada’s music. HONORABLE MENTION “Don’t Bother Me” by Original Sans. Catchy and infectious melody, expect the song to be played long after the Carnival season is over. PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR Mr. Legs at Soca Monarch. Easily the most dominant performance by a Soca Monarch Finals debutant. An exceptionally talented young man with a very, very bright future. HONORABLE MENTION Anywhere Lava Man performed. Lava proved that a title does not validate talent and that the people will be the ultimate judges. EVENT OF THE YEAR By far Ajamu’s 25th anniversary show. A fitting tribute for an individual who has become the embodiment of class, consistency, professionalism and great entertainment. HONORABLE MENTION Tuesday morning Jouvert in Gouyave. While the attention on Carnival Tuesday mornings has been focused on Sauteurs over the last 3 years or so, Gouyave has slowly but steadily put the action back into “Action City.” PRODUCER OF THE YEAR Paul Thomas. The most consistent and dominant producer over the last 5 years. From Junior and Senior Calypso to Soca, Thomas’ Mt Zion Studios continues to be a model of consistency. HONORABLE MENTION Jimmy King. Took Brother B to another level this year. WRITER OF THE YEAR By far Neil Ferguson. Wrote both songs for the new Calypso Monarch Biko. Has a tremendous track record of penning winning composition as Beast and Scholar can attest to. HONORABLE MENTION King Ajamu who wrote both songs for former Junior Calypso Monarch and first senior Calypso Finalist Rico. Knowing Ajamu is some how involved in the development of calypso is a very comforting feeling for fans of Calypso. OTHER HONORABLE MENTIONS • Commancheros Mas Band for its portrayal of local calypso. • The RGPF for its dedication, patience and vigilance throughout the entire season. • Teacher Eddie on his 25th anniversary as a calypsonian and song writer. • Judah Sound System for taking sound to another level. His quality and clarity is amazing. • The St. John Social and Cultural Organization, the St. Patrick CDC and the St. Andrew CDC for accomplishing what the National Committee wasn’t able to. These 3 Committees continue to meet year round and were once again able to efficiently deliver quality Carnival seasons in their various Parishes. • The participants of Panorama. Easily one of the highest quality Panoramas ever with the 7 bands in competition separated by only 23 points. • And finally but most importantly the people of Grenada for once again exhibiting the spirit of goodwill and good sense.
