ST. ANDREW’S: - Leon Abel, a former student of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS), is the most outstanding performer in Unit 2 of this year’s Caribbean Advance Proficiency Exams (CAPE). Abel started the two-year CAPE program at the T. A Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) in 2006, after attaining all 11 subjects at the CXC level, which included 10 Grade 1s. That year, he was also the Valedictorian at his school’s graduation exercise which took place at the SAASS building in Telescope, St. Andrew. Leon was also the recipient of the prestigious EU Buckmire Memorial Award in 2006. This is an award that is given annually to a student in one of the three secondary schools in the parish of St. Andrew for meritorious performance in the field of science. (This award is made possible by the Buckmire brothers, the owners of Paris Pharmacy in Grenville). After his first year at TAMCC (2006-2007), Abel was able to obtain excellent grades in Unit I of the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Exams in the four subjects he chose to study at the college (Chemistry I, Biology I, Mathematics I & Physics II). This year, in Unit 2 of the exam, Abel was able to exceed his outstanding 2007 academic performance by getting 5 Grade 1s (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics & Communication). Leon Abel, who resides in the rural village of Post Royal in St. Andrew’s, attributed his success to his hard work, faith in the Almighty and the tremendous support he received from teachers, friends and family, especially his proud parents – Mr. Lincoln Abel and Mrs. Wilma Abel. His father, in speaking to the press, made an appeal for more fathers to take an active role in the upbringing of their children, encouraging them get more involved in assisting their children so that they can realize their God-given potential. When asked about his plans for the future, Leon told Grenadian Connection that he intends to pursue studies in the field of Chemical Engineering. Grenadian Connection joins with thousands of persons living in Grenada (as well as throughout the diaspora) in congratulating Mr. Leon Abel on his excellent achievement. His success will indubitably serve as an inspiration to many young persons in our society, especially our young men, who would have seen the rewards of hard work, discipline, dedication and the relentless pursuit of one’s dream. We wish Mr. Abel continued success in all his future endeavors. Wallace J.A Inside Grenada News

Congratulations to the young man. The youth of this country can be positive and successful as this young man has shown, but it requires commitment on their part and the support of the family. I agree with what the father said, fathers need to stop thinking that giving their kids some money is all they need to contribute.
