Ninety-eight people have been arrested on the first day of Notting Hill Carnival.
London police have installed metal detectors to keep down gun and knife crime at this year's festivities
Around three-quarts of a million people are expected on the streets of West London on Monday for day two.
The theme of this year's carnival is 'Welcoming the world' in line with Sunday's Olympic handover from Beijing to London, the host of the 2012 Games.
London police took to the streets alongside the revellers. In advance of the festivities, nine people had been arrested following intelligence exercises.
From the weekend, police installed metal detectors on the three-mile route to try and stop people carrying guns and knives.

NOTTING HILL ARRESTS
The carnival was good re little violence save in the last couple hours when some fools decide to make trouble.
Reveller, it is true the young british-west indian ent know much about carnival. on my way home thought that it might be a good thing to get band leadres to show their "masqueraders" how we do it in the Caribbean. "Choice" that plays calypso/soca for 2 hours a week was playing Hip Hop and Rn'B! I found that very disgusting. ITV, who were carryng aspects of Carnival said that it is "good to see Calypso and Soca making their way into the Carnival"! What a load of crap! They should apologise! Do they really understand what Carnival is about? Three white women on a bus, one " are you looking forward to eating jerk chicken?" Another one, "which sound system should we go? There is one where we went last time with free beer."
Many people do not see the street parade of the bands or do not go to see same.They go off into the enclosed areas to have a "good time", drink, drugs and other crime.That is where police should concentrate their efforts as alluded to elsewhere.

hi mary yes you are right this festival is meant to celiberate freedom and you only have to get a couple of bone heads dimwits who think that they bad to spoil it for others, fear to say i played with the invaders band and as true as i know it there was no trouble in our band,the problem i think is that some of the young kids today dont quite know or respect what carnival is all about because they are born to a different generation of various cultures and dont quite know how to celiberate this festive time we need to teach them if they would let us.

fair to say it was peaceful if thats all the arrest out of millions of nationlities. Crowds spells trouble
