NEW MINISTER OF FINANCE ENGAGES BANKERS’ ASSOCIATION

Thursday, August 28, 2008, St. George’s: On Thursday August 7, 2008, the new Minister for Finance held his first meeting with the Bankers’ Association of Grenada to discuss his Government’s plans for the financial sector and their expectations of the banking sector. The Minister told the bank representatives that “this is the beginning of a new partnership” where the sector and government will work together to ensure the financial stability of the country. The discussions held included:  The financial regulatory framework and the effective and proactive regulation of the financial sector;  The restructuring of the Ministry of Finance;  Identifying and promoting the lead sector(s) in the economy;  The role of ‘Energy’ in the economy and the creation of an energy policy; and  The reformation of the Economy. The information disclosed was well received by the bankers who assured the Minister of their willingness to work closely with the Ministry to ensure fruitfulness of his government’s plans. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that meetings of this nature will be held on a regular basis as a means of keeping abreast with the various developments in the financial arena and economy in general.
