Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas and Foreign Minister Peter David yesterday met with a delegation from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat led by Director General D. Len Ishmael. The Prime Minister is the new chairman of the OECS, a position that is rotated among the nine member states. The meeting outlined plans for the next heads of government summit which will be held in St. Lucia on the 11th of September. One of the issues on the agenda for that meeting will be the recently signed memorandum of understanding between several OECS countries and Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Ishmael updated the Prime Minister on the issues facing the OECS in general and the Secretariat in particular. She said Prime Minister Thomas was becoming chair of the organization as a very critical time in the regions development. The OECS Director General said the Secretariat was changing to better support member states. “We want to be in a position to provide the kind if support that will help leaders to make informed decisions, and the secretariat is changing to reflect that,” she said. Prime Minister Thomas thanked the OECS Director General for her visit to Grenada and committed Grenada to the sub regional body, the treaty of Basseterre and the integration process. She said while the traditional relationships still played a role in the development of the region, the growth of South-South cooperation was becoming a major building block to the OECS territories. ‘These ties are very important to the future of the OECS”, she said, pointing to opportunities offered by Venezuela, Brazil and Cuba. The team leaves Grenada tomorrow. Inside Grenada News
