JUDGE CALLS FOR PRAYERS FOR GRENADA'S YOUTH
A senior High Court judge in Grenada has lamented the fact that there are far too many young offenders and has issued a call for prayers to be offered for the young people of the country. Speaking at the closing of the Criminal Assizes, Justice Clare Henry called on the jurors and the public to pray for the youth of the nation, who she said are lacking in direction. There are far too many criminal cases in the country and only 44 of the 80 cases listed for hearing were completed, but the assize was nevertheless described as being successful, since the court room had to be used for a week by the Appellate Court. The President of the Grenada Bar Association, Ruggles Ferguson, said that a third judge is needed to deal with the large number of both criminal and civil cases. There are 33 males awaiting trial, while 56 males and two females are on remand, while 262 males and ten females have been convicted for various offences and are serving jail sentences. Grenada's population is just over 90,000. Reprinted from Caribbean Net News caribbeannetnews.com
