The Grenada Calypso Judges Association on Saturday September 6 hosted its most successful symposium to date. Well over fifty (50) persons attended last Saturday’s event at Bain’s Upper Level in Grenville, St. Andrew. The attendees include an impressive cross-section of active calypso judges, prospective judges and young and veteran artistes. The symposium was chaired by chief calypso judge for the 2008 season Judy Benoit and included a review of the most recent season, followed by a presentation on lyrics by Colin Dowe and a very informative presentation on melody by Allan Gaskin. The review of the 2008 season provided a unique opportunity for judges and artistes to engage in a very enlightening discussion about varying aspects of the competitions and the adjudication process. Mr. Dowe’s expose on lyrics provided insight into some of the expectations of judges as it relates to cohesiveness and conviction in story-telling through song. He further reiterated the use of local vernacular and language to which the targeted listener or audience member can relate to. Mr. Gaskin closed Saturday’s session with a very demonstrative presentation on melody. His use of musical instruments and other visual aids emphasized his points about the use of melody and its effectiveness in writing and performing. The symposium will continue on Saturday September 13th at Bain’s Upper Level in Grenville. The continuation will give Allan Gaskin the chance to complete his outlook on melody after which there will be an opportunity for all participants to view some performances from the 2008 calypso and soca semifinals and score those performances.
