ANNUAL SCHOOL GARDENING COMPETITION  
The Agricultural Science Unit within the Curriculum Department, Ministry of Education, will be holding its annual School Gardening Competition beginning September 1, 2008 and ending January 30, 2009. The competition will be held in 3 categories: Category A- Primary Schools with adequate land space Category B- Secondary Schools with adequate land space Category C- Schools with inadequate land space utilizing alternative means of crop production. Each school in Category A and B is expected to cultivate three (3) crops, one from any of the groups listed below. Schools in Category C is expected to cultivate one (1) crop selected from any of the groups listed. Crops to be cultivated MUST be selected form the following groups: GROUP 1 Leafy vegetable; e.g. lettuce, cabbage, patchoi, celery, etc. GROUP 2 Fruit vegetable; e.g. tomato, cucumber, ochro, peppers, etc. GROUP 3 Root crop; e.g. carrot, sweet potato, beets, etc. GROUP 4 Flower crop; e.g. cauliflower, broccoli GROUP 5 Legume; e.g. beans GROUP 6 Cereal: e.g. corn The following criteria will be used for judging: Field sanitization and general appearance Use of appropriate cultural practices Productivity Record Keeping Innovation All schools are encouraged to participate. We actually need to create a "Plant A Tree Day", where some of us landowners can get a tree hopefully from our goverment and plant in the land. This should be done once a year.
