An enthusiastic crowd erupted in cheers on Saturday night as their favorite, 23-year-old Rolinda Tera McIntosh, was crowned the new Miss Grenada/USA. The auditorium of the Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York, was awash in the colors of the Grenadian flag for the 17th annual Miss Grenada/USA Pageant, sponsored by the Grenada-American Ex-Teacher's Association. The seven contestants in this yearıs pageant, all with roots firmly planted in the Spice Isle, treated the appreciative audience to an exciting evening. In their first appearance in the casual wear section of the program, the young ladies surprised those present by entering the auditorium from the back walking down the aisles to go on the stage The swimwear segment proved popular as usual and gave the judges ample opportunity to assess the participants’ fitness. One highlight of the event was the talent competition, which was highly entertaining and saw excellent performances in song, dance, spoken word and even a rendition in steel pan. There were also performances by Mt. Hope Spiritual Group and special guest artiste Trisha Douglas, who is a three-time winner at the popular Showtime at the Apollo talent competition. Then it was time for the young ladies to grace the stage in a dazzling display of evening wear. They also answered interview questions and spoke for several minutes on their chosen platform. Contestants were rated on an array of disciplines including physical fitness, style, dress, talent and beauty. As head judge Mr. Millington began announcing the sectional prizes the applause grew louder and louder as the audience realized that it was a complete shut out and that crowd favorite, McIntosh, had won all the individual prizes. The result seemed a foregone conclusion after that but still the audience roared in delight as McIntosh was crowned the winner at the end of the three-hour-long contest.
