New York City Council members and community leaders will hold a press conference and reception at the Red Room of City Hall on Friday, September 19, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. The visit to New York City by Prime Minister Hon. Tillman J. Thomas of Grenada, comes two months following a closely fought electoral campaign in which Mr. Thomas’ party defeated a 13-year incumbent. The former Prime Minister of Grenada is currently involved in court proceedings in the Southern District federal courts in connection with the former government’s alleged involvement in international fraud and bribery schemes. Prime Minister Thomas is viewed in Grenada and throughout the Caribbean as a reformer who is deeply committed to respect for democratic institutions, accountability, and transparency in government, particularly, in the off-shore financial investment sector. Grenada’s Prime Minister is the current chairman of CARICOM, the 15-member nation bloc of island nations. Accompanying Mr. Thomas are two members of his government including, Hon. George Prime, Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Hon. Patrick Simmons, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Culture and Sports. The event is hosted by City Councilman Charles Barron and City Hall. A reception follows the press conference.
