WORLD FOOD DAY 2008 CELEBRATIONS BEGINS IN GRENADA
Monday 22 September 2008: “The Challenges of Climate Change and Bio-energy is the theme for World Food Day 2008 celebrations. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries joins the rest of the world on October 16th, 2008 to celebrate the day. Ministry officials have organized a series of public fora and exhibitions as part of a programme of activities that will take place in each agricultural district around the island in the weeks preceding October 16th, 2008. The activities start on Tuesday 23 September with a public forum at the Grenville Agricultural Office at 6:00pm while on Thursday 25 September an exhibition will be staged on Seaton James Street in Grenville from 11:00am. On Tuesday 30 September the forum moves to the St. Patrick’s Anglican School at 6:00pm and Thursday 2 October there will be an exhibition at the Sauteurs Vendors Market at 11:00am. On Tuesday 7 October the Forum will be at the St. Johns Anglican School and with an exhibition set for Thursday 9 October at St. George’s Fish Market Grounds. The final forum will be on Tuesday 14 October at the Corinth Government School at 6:00pm and the final exhibition will be staged on Thursday 16 October at the La Sagesse playing Field from 11:00am. The final forum and exhibition will be staged in the southern agricultural district, at which awards will be given to outstanding persons in the agricultural sector. World Food day 2008 will assume a greater meaning this year compared with previous years. “World Food day will be a significant event for us in Grenada. It must help focus our plan for the development of agriculture and our thrust toward food security. It is a good measuring stick to help us improve our performance and organization of the sector year on year,” said Agriculture Minister Michael D. Lett. Other activities marking World Food Day include a Survey by the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) in collaboration with the extension division, a 5K walk on Monday 13 October from 5:00pm from the Botanical Gardens. There will also be Radio and TV programme appearances and a poster and art competition in the schools on the theme. World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. World Food Day aims to heighten public awareness of the plight of the world's hungry and malnourished and to encourage people worldwide to take action against hunger. With the number of undernourished people currently estimated at more than 850 million worldwide, high food prices are not only putting the hungry at greater risk but those on the brink of poverty. The implications of soaring food prices and related issues were considered at the recent High-level Conference on World Food Security, involving the UN Secretary-General, 181 governments and 41 Heads of State or Government that took place at FAO headquarters from 3rd to 5th June, 2008..
