The St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School’s (S.A.A.S.S) Alumni Association, based in New York, has planned a grand Dinner Dance and Awards Gala to be held on Friday October 10, 2008 at Glen Terrace on East 53rd and East 54th Street in New York. This function is carded to commence at 10:00 pm and persons who attend are expected to be treated with classy entertainment until around 3:00 am the next morning. The special honorees at the Awards Ceremony are Joachim Mark, who will be recognized by the alumni for his invaluable contribution in the area of community service. He will receive the Community Service Award. The other awardee to obtain special recognition at this gala function is Alleyne Francique, who will receive an award for his outstanding achievements in the field of sports. Over the years, the members of the S.A.A.S.S Alumni Association (New York Chapter) have been able to forge a close working relationship with their alma mater and have provided much needed support to the institution in several important areas. The assistance made available by this hard-working group of committed men and women has lead to the creation of a better teaching and learning environment at the school and has contributed significantly towards the excellent performance of its students in the fields of academics and sports. Nestled atop a hill in the rural community of Telescope overlooking the picturesque town of Grenville, S.A.A.S.S has so far this year been able to win almost all major sporting tournaments involving secondary schools on the island, key among them being the coveted INTERCOL title in athletics. The 2008 CXC results have recorded that two students of the school (Shevon Alexander and Kevin Blache) obtained 11 subject passes in their examinations, ranking them among the top academic performers in the nation. Many others would have received passes in 10, 9 and 8 subjects. The school has obtained above 80% passes in 15 subject areas. At the level of T.A Marryshow Community College, former student and present teacher at S.A.A.S.S, Mr. Leon Abel, was able to earn himself the title of Island Scholar for his outstanding performance in Unit 2 of CAPE (Caribbean Advance Proficiency Exam). He obtained five Grade 1s in Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Communication. The New York group is presently engaged in activities geared towards providing more assistance to the school, which will present the young people of the institution with added incentives and help ensure that they take maximum advantage of the opportunities that are made available to them. The INSIDE GRENADA staff wishes to salute the hard-working men and women of the S.A.A.S.S Alumni Association in New York for their dedication and commitment in helping to provide the requisite support to the young boys and girls presently attending their alma mater. Your assistance can help make a difference in the lives of these young people who are aspiring to achieve great things. We urge other persons to support the organization and become an integral part of this very noble venture. By Wallace J.A Inside Grenada News
