GRENADA TAEKWONDO ATHLETE WINS BRONZE IN PUERTO RICO
Grenada’s Andrea St. Bernard recently made history winning a first ever medal at the 2008 Pan-American Taekwondo Championships, October 2-6, in Puerto Rico. Andrea successfully worked herself into the medal rounds by defeating Dominican Republic in the quarterfinal round. Using explosive long range kicking attacks, superior ring management and a rock-solid defense, Andrea defeated her Dominican counterpart by a score of 6 to 1. Although the United States finally wrested the gold medal from her, Andrea's day-long performance put Grenada on the podium for the first time ever with a bronze medal in the women's welterweight division. Sharing Andrea's accomplishments at the championships were two coaches and five athletes from her Toronto training club, the Young Su Choung Taekwondo Academy. Among the five accompanying her was Bernard Lorde, fighting for Barbados. In addition to Andrea's bronze medal; Shannon Condie, Dasha Peregoudova and Siddu Bhat took Canadian golds in their divisions, and Master Dossantos was awarded Best Female Coach, leading team Canada to an overall First-place finish. In short, as well as it being a very good weekend for Team Grenada, it was also a very good championship for the High-Performance Team from Young Choung Taekwondo. As Andrea and the rest of the bunch headed back to training headquarters at YC Taekwondo in Toronto, to heal up from a weekend of kicking, punching and bruising, they knew that their work is still not done. The 2008 season still has a number of international tournaments left in November, including: Young Choung Taekwondo Academy's own Toronto Open, the Paris Open and the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships of Winnipeg, Canada. All a tune-up for the 2009 season, which climaxes next October in Copenhagen, Denmark at the World Taekwondo Championships where Andrea will be looking to make history for Grenada...again.
