WHY POOR PEOPLE AGAIN?
The opposition is shocked and concerned that the new administration has been able to gather the courage to reduce the pay for persons involved in the debushing programme. While Ministers of Government continue to enjoy their same salary, they have taken a decision to cut the pay of the poor road workers, many of whom are facing serious economic challenges as the price of basic food items increase daily and when many persons through out the country are complaining that they are finding it difficult to put food on their table. The NNP while in office, provided salary increases to public servants including teachers, police officers and others. The Keith Mitchell led administration also gave increases to agricultural workers. Recognising the rising cost of living and considering that the road workers had not gotten an increase in a long time, the NNP administration decided to increase the rate paid to road workers. This action was condemned by the NDC Government as they had to find a reason to justify the reduction in pay. The excuse given by the Minister for Works is that the increase was politically driven. If this is the reason, then why is it that the NDC did not reduce the salaries of other workers who recently got increases under the Keith Mitchell administration? The statements by the Minister have been consistent with a ‘don’t care’ attitude for the poor, since he has made similar statements regarding the NNP’s decision to increase monies spent on the debushing programme earlier this year. The opposition questions why the Government is always pressuring the most vulnerable to make sacrifices since it was also the poor who were expected to come out and do voluntary service over the last few months when the clean up drive was organized around the island. It must be noted that the NNP administration always looked out for the poor and vulnerable in a special way. Special programmes were introduced or expanded to assist the vulnerable to deal with the rising cost of living, such as: the milk programme, the food basket programme, the school voucher programme, the debushing programme, transportation support programme and more. It should be recalled that in the 2002 Budget Presentation, Finance Minister at the time, Anthony Boatswain announced Cabinet’s decision to reduce the salaries of all Ministers by 10%. That decision was taken against the backdrop of the slow down in Grenada’s economy following the events of September 11th. As a result of this decision, the salary of Ministers moved from $65,000 per annum to $58, 500 per annum. The opposition therefore calls on the new Government in these tough economic times to reconsider its decision and to return to the previous rate paid to the road workers. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS WRITER. I must say i would love to have a debate about the issues at hand concerning the governments who have previously ruled and is ruling because it seems that this WRITER has tunnel vision or might well be an affiliate of the Michelle's party. if so that's your choice but you must decease from writing BS. Even thought wat is noted may be true think of the bads. what have that particular government done wrong. "nothing in your eyes clearly", but from what i have gathered, that government have done enough damage to this country in the 13 or so years of governance than any other government have done. except for the revolution. May i remind remind the people that Mr. Michelle's government made the poor very very poorer and the rich way richer. people like himself and his associates who ruled that house. That bloody house speaker they had is such a jerk and i hope that if he has not been removed yet it should be done soon.

What's wrong with you people?13 years and poor people are still poor?Yet there are so much uncollected taxes and KCM is making excuses why people cannot pay taxes. Then close down the business. You were a sad example of a PM.How did you wanted to run this country. That's the reason Nurses and Police Officers cannot get a decent pay and there is a shortage of nurses. You abandon agriculture-Our only natural resources for wealth and you are not collecting taxes.YOU GOT TO BE CRAZY!How do you live with yourself and sleep at night.i could see you sympathizing with these business owners but taxes have to be paid, and for you to make it public !You are only looking for sympathy from your supporters but election is 5years away.WHAT ARE ALL THESE FOREIGN INVESTORS DOING!!!!!!

i sometime wonder why ex government ministers /prime minister when voted out of office them seems to be using the poor /poor slogan to remind us HOW much they care for the poor admist us, are these the same people who kept the teachers waiting for some sort of back pay some four years ago which resulted in strike action, as for the nurses and police what are they talking about or is this some sort of brain washing by concerntrating on this three bodies because of their importance within our community again i ask when they the nnp talk about the poor are they talking about the labourers, the road workers, the shop workers, the hospitals porters and cleaners, please tell me who the hell are they talking about and why are their voices so loud about the poor when while in government all they cared about was their rich friends, grenadians please dont be fooled these people were in government for some thirteen years before that blessed day when they were kicked (voted) out now every time they open their mouth out comes the word caring for the poor yes we have an economic down turn/ credit crunch and that means we all have to tighten our belts that include the poorest admist us but we should not use the poor for our own political gains so come on HM opposition lets be more positive in this time. one love, one grenada.
