GRENADA: - The St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) has successfully moved through to the semi-final round of the Grenlec sponsored Inter-secondary school debate competition after defeating the St. Joseph’s Convent (St. George’s) in a closely contested quarter-final encounter on Tuesday November 11. The debate was held at the Mt. Rose SDA Comprehensive School and involved three students from each of the two secondary schools (SAASS and SJC). The moot was: Be it resolved that with immediate effect there should be a moratorium on further marina development in Grenada. SJC was the ‘proposing’ team while SAASS was the ‘opposing’ team. The young debaters were very impressive in their presentations and demonstrated a high level of competence in their delivery as well as a superb understanding of the subject being debated. In the end, the SAASS team prevailed, amassing a total of 225.5 points to SJCs 219 points – a difference of 6.5 points. This victory has earned SAASS a place in the semi-final round of the competition. The team is expected to lock horns with Westmorland Secondary - another semi-finalist team – on Wednesday November 19. The new moot is: Be it resolved that the introduction of casino gambling can make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of small island states like Grenada. Westmorland will be proposing while SAASS will be opposing. The SAASS team comprises Daniel Harford, Nakita Wells and Michaelson Baptiste – all Form 5 students preparing to write their CXC exams in 2009. So far, the SAASS team has defeated the St. Mark's Secondary School, the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School and the St. Joseph’s Convent (St. George’s). The other two teams in the semi-finals are Beacon High School and St. Rose Modern Secondary School. By Wallace J.A Inside Grenada News
