ST.ANDREW’S: In spite of the heavy rains, landslides and shortage of water in most parts of the island on Tuesday November 18, Professor Eugene Pursoo of Medgar Evers College braved the inclement weather to visit St. Andrew’s and meet with teachers and form five students of the three secondary schools in the parish. Professor Pursoo’s first stop was at his alma mater - the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (S.A.A.S.S) - where he interacted with the members of staff and shared information with them in respect of the opportunities that existed at Medgar Evers College for persons desirous of furthering their education and broadening their intellectual horizons. The Distinguished Lecturer and Deputy Chair in the Department of Public Administration at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York then proceeded to the St. Joseph’s Convent building to meet with Form 5 students from Grenville Secondary School (G.S.S), S.A.A.S.S and S.J.C (Grenville). He spoke to the students about the importance of their education in today’s highly competitive global environment and the sort of opportunities that this can open up for them in life. He made effective uses of real life examples and artfully crafted philosophy to get the information across. He addressed the concerns that students harbored and encouraged them to love and respect their teachers and to appreciate the tremendous sacrifices that teachers are making on their behalf. Based on subsequent feedback from the students in attendance, the session was highly informative and very enlightening. Professor Eugene Pursoo is one of Grenada’s most prominent intellectuals with an impressive track record in various fields of endeavor. After graduating from S.A. A.S.S in 1967, he migrated to the USA and attended Fordham University in New York, where he received a BA degree in Accounting and an MA degree in Political Science. He then worked for The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Inc., first as an accountant and finally as the Deputy Director of Finance. In July of 1990, he was appointed Grenada’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations - a position in which he served until July of 1995. He headed Grenada’s delegation at several global conferences, including the Rio Summit in Brazil, in June 1992; the Social Summit in Copenhagen, in 1994; and the UN Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island States, in Barbados in 1994. Professor Pursoo joined Medgar Evers College in September 1995, where he served as Special Assistant to the President; Director of Institutional Advancement; Director of International Affairs; and currently as a Distinguished Lecturer and Deputy Chair of the Department of Public Administration. Professor Pursoo has written many articles on the political economy and on the environment of small island states, and has received numerous honors from various organizations. This distinguished son of the soil intends to give back as much as he could to his country in the area of human resource development. He intends to visit Grenada annually and meet with children and teachers from schools throughout the island for the purpose of sharing information, ideas and experiences. The Inside Grenada Staff wishes to thank Professor Pursoo for this noble initiative he has embarked on and hopes that teachers and students throughout the tri-island state will make maximum use of the many opportunities that will be available to them in the future to share information and enhance their educational and professional development.
