Members of the Opposition take strong objection to the fact that a 400 page document relating to the 2009 budget was circulated to them only 24 hours before the schedule time for a Parliamentary Finance Committee Meeting. Finance committee meetings are required of all elected Parliamentarians to approve and endorse all government expenditure in and prior to the budget presentation. As a consequence of the above, members of the Opposition had no time to undertake a reasonable study of the said document in order to make a meaningful contribution to today’s (1st December) Committee meeting. As a result members of the opposition were denied the opportunity to participate. This trend of lack of consultation in setting dates for Parliamentary sessions and the late distribution of documents have been pointed out to the government on several occasions by the Opposition. This behaviour by the Government demonstrates flagrant disregard and disrespect for the democratic process and for our institutions. Despite the advice given by the Leader of the Opposition to the leader of Government Business and the Prime minister of the problems that will be caused with the document not being circulated in time, and that three members of the Opposition were out of the island, yet the meeting was not rescheduled.
