GRENADA TAKES STEPS TO ERADICATE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Grenada’s Ministry of Social Development is continuing efforts to try and eradicate domestic violence from the Grenadian society. The Ministry, in collaboration with the Grenada National Organization for Women (GNOW), recently hosted a two day training exercise on the issue for members of the Royal Grenada Police Force. The training began last Thursday and concluded on Friday at the Grenada Trade Center. It was aimed at equipping police officers with the relevant skills to handle instances of domestic violence in a more effective and efficient manner. According to a release from the Social Development Ministry, the police are usually the first responders to instances of domestic violence. As a result of the sensitive nature domestic violence, properly trained law enforcement officers will be better able to handle this “societal menace.” Caribbean Net News was informed that the training, part of activities to commemorate sixteen days of activism to protest violence against women, was facilitated by Director of the Legal Aid and Counseling Clinic, Jacqueline Sealy- Burke and Domestic Violence Intervention Officer Shane Joseph. The training session comes on the heels of a round table discussion Tuesday with various stakeholders geared towards increasing cooperation among the agencies that deals with victims and perpetrators of Domestic Violence. Minister of Social Development, Glynis Roberts, members of the RGPF, representatives from St George’s University and Director of Public Prosecution, Christopher Nelson also attended the training session.
