The National Democratic Congress administration respects and holds fast to the United Nations Declaration of Human rights. As Prime Minister, I am very familiar with this area. As some of you will know I worked as a lawyer dealing with Human rights issues in the early part of my political career. On this 60th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration I want to highlight the circumstances facing our women folk. This year’s theme is dignity and justice for all. As part of our observance of the day I want to focus attention on women. While we have come a long way in addressing some of the challenges facing our women and we cannot deny that there are still some challenges that must be dealt with to further improve their economic and social conditions. If women are free from violence, their lives will grow. If they have a chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society our country will prosper. And when families thrive, communities and nations will move forward. The Grenada National Organisation of Women has been championing the rights of women in Grenada and they are making good progress; the recent week of activities on violence against women is testimony to their efforts and their advancement. There are women in Grenada who are working every day to promote higher education and better working conditions for themselves; they are in our hospitals carrying out their duties as doctors and nurses caring for our sick citizens; there are increasing number of women in Board Rooms making decisions about the future of their companies. Grenada salutes your effort and strides, as you continue to make your contribution to our development as a country. We acknowledge and greatly appreciate the enormous effort and dedication you bring to your endeavors. Our country is better off for your patriotic and selfless contribution. Let me assure, that your government will not be tolerant of any criminal attacks on our women folk, just because they are more vulnerable. We shall not tolerate any form of harassment, or discrimination against women. We shall work tirelessly towards gender equality. Rest assured that your government will ensure your voices are heard.
