LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Sir, I have been looking at several appointments since the present Government came into power on the basis that they believe in integrity and accountability. With each passing day, we the Grenadian people are becoming more and more convinced that they are not practicing what they preach. I am concerned that a Prime Minister who promotes himself as having integety will appoint Glen Noel as a Senator. Mr. Noel’s appointment in the Ministry of Health a few years ago ended with his resignation under embarrassing circumstances for him. The appointment of Mr. Jimmy Bristol as Attorney General is also a concern to many as it is well known about his past attitude including a confrontation he had with a police officer. The way he dealt with the issue of the citizenship of the former Prime Minister also leaves a lot to be desired. Mr. Kenrick Fullerton as advisor to the Minister for Youth Development is another concern. The Prime Minister himself objected to and disqualified Mr. Fullerton from being a candidate in the last general election because of mismanagement of funds and a physical encounter he had with his wife. Today the Prime Minister sees it appropriate to place him in such a position where he will work closely with the young women of our nation and where he will give advice on issues related to youth development. Another potential candidate who did not get the nod to be a candidate was Sen. Arley Gill. However because of the role he played in the campaign he was rewarded with a Ministerial position. Sen. Gill is well known for his attitude and his record both in his private and professional life. His recent display of arrogance and disrespect during a press conference must have been a great embarrassment to the Prime Minister and all concerned. Making Mr. Mervin Haynes Director of Economic Affairs is an action which leaves even members of the NDC concerned. Was it really the right choice to be made Mr. Prime Minister? After spending quite a bit of time attacking the former Government and Prime Minister it is time to reward Pastor Stanford Simon. He even went as far as to say, he will not pray for the former Prime Minister. Most of his sermons and teachings were political speeches which strayed from the teaching of God. It is well known that Simon is Chairman of a contract firm which was dismissed by the Grenada Solid Waste Authority for non satisfactory service, yet he was appointed chairman of the Grenada Housing Authority. This position as chairman can only be perceived as a conflict of interest. Another case of conflict of interest is the appointment of the Hon. Joseph Gilbert as Minister for Works and Physical Planning. The Prime Minister is fully aware that Minister Gilbert is a major Director of a contracting firm which is now doing several projects with the government and is bidding for several more. These are just some of the examples of appointments by government that says it believes in honesty, transparency and accountability. B.
