December 28, 2008 - The West Indies Cricket Team continued their lackluster, roller coaster performance in the second and final match of the Twenty/20 International against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton this morning (local time). Batting first, the kiwis were able to amass 130 runs before losing their first wicket in the 12th over. The Kiwi batsmen were aided by some rather ordinary bowling and disastrous fielding by the West Indies – dropping several catches and mis-fielding several shots in the outfield. At one time, the Kiwis were expected to score well over 200 runs in their allotted 20 overs, but some improved fielding and bowling in the 13th over saw the West Indies restricting New Zealand to 191/6 after 20 overs. The most successful West Indian bowler was Chris Gayle who took 2 wickets for 27 runs in his 4 overs. The star bowler from the first Twenty/20, Suleiman Benn went for 45 in his 4 overs and only took 1 wicket while Fidel Edwards went for 31 in 2 overs and was wicket less. Top scorers for New Zealand were opening batsmen Jesse Ryder (62) and Brendon Mc Cullum (59). Chasing a total of 192 for victory at a run rate of 9.6 per over was always a massive uphill task for the unpredictable Windies team and when Chris Gayle lost his wicket early in the 2nd over to debutant Ewen Thompson for only 1 run, the writing was on the wall for the West Indies. A spirited struggle by Ramnaresh Sarwan (53), Kieron Pollard (38) and Denesh Ramdin (30) just was not enough and the visitors were only able to muster a paltry 155/7 in their 20 overs with a run rate of only 7.7 runs per over. The Kiwis have therefore won the second T20I by 36 runs, drawing the series 1-1. All eyes are now turned to the five ODIs between the two teams, the first of which is scheduled to take place at the Queenstown Events Centre on Wednesday December 31, 2008.
