Grenada’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. James Clarkson, has expressed concern over the way in which some young persons in the country dress and walk the streets, especially some young men and boys who wear their pants underneath their ‘buttocks’ with their underwear showing out. The term used in some quarters to refer to this is 'sagging' and in recent times, authorities in different countries have sought to address this 'undesirable dress code.' Commissioner James sees this development as not in keeping with common decency and good taste and pledges that in the upcoming year, steps will be taken by members of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) to address this situation. An overwhelming majority of Grenadians are in support of the Commissioner in this regard and share his sentiments. Most times, young men can be seen walking the streets throughout the nation with their pants waists almost as low down as around their knees. As a natural consequence, they either have to walk and hold up the front of their pants or walk with their legs wide-open to prevent their pants from falling down to their ankles. Interestingly, some young girls are now following that trend. Most people are of the view that this recent phenomenon came about as a result of cultural penetration with our youth consuming quite a lot of American sub-cultural content. Most young people get into styles without knowing their true origins as long as it enables them to identify with their ‘role models’, many of whom are persons with criminal pasts who form part of the music industry and are viewed on music videos. As is expected, some young people are of the view that they can wear their clothes anyhow they please and see themselves as merely doing something that is quite fashionable. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
