GRENADA PREPARES FOR 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONHOOD
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada, Jan 10, 2009 - As Grenada approaches the 35th anniversary of nationhood, The Independence Committee is planning a series of educational radio and television programmes examining the use of national symbols and emblems. One of the topics to be covered in the series is the Constitution, which Grenada has been using since it gained independence from Britain on February 7, 1974. The Independence Committee, in a news release, said the Constitution is an important document and that all citizens of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique should be familiar with its provisions. Committee members say their aim is to encourage all persons to be aware of the protection of their Fundamental Rights and Freedoms under the Constitution, including the Right to Life and liberty. Other rights guaranteed by the Constitution include the security of persons and the protection of the law, and the right to Freedom of Conscience, Expression, and Assembly and of Association. Apart from the Constitution, other topics to be discussed in the radio and TV programmes of the Independence Committee are the Coat of Arms, the Flag, the Anthem, the Pledge and Motto, as well as national cuisine and dress.
