St. George's, January 15, 2009, (GIS) - The Willie Redhead Foundation has undertaken a project aimed at transforming the Town of St. George's into a "Green City". Foundation member James Findley describes the project as a conservation of green places and open spaces. "This initiative is about the environment in the Town of St. George's,'' he said."We have recognized that the town is losing much of its greenness, so we are taking the opportunity to introduce the population of Grenada to the idea of greenness as eco-friendliness.'' Mr. Findley said an important component of the project involves technology. He explained that the Willie Redhead Foundation is looking to the government of Grenada for support in this area, as well as for other forms for technical assistance. "We are looking for inevitable support,'' said Mr. Findley, "and one of our inevitable supporters is government. We want to live and work within the mainstream of government's agenda. We can't work beyond government's agenda and hope to succeed in any major way.'' Parliamentary Representative for the Town of St. George, Peter David, lamented the negative impact of human conduct and behaviour on the environment. The MP and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism wants to see a balance between preservation and development. He has suggested that when tourists visit Grenada, the product they want to see must include a preserved environment. "There must be ways in which development can take place while our heritage, environment and ecosystem are preserved,'' Mr. David said."All of us have an obligation to find ways to do this.'' Minister of State for Works, Physical Development and Environment, Sylvester Quarless, boasted that Grenada is well ahead in the planning stage of its proposed "Green City'' project. If successful, Grenada will be a model to the rest of the Caribbean region, Mr. Quarless said. He believes there are both environmental and economic benefits to be derived from the greening of the Town of St. George. "The presence of trees in the town can decrease air, noise and water pollutions, and ''said the Junior Environment Minister."Since plants depend on water to grow, the more plants there are, the more absorption there will be and there will be less run-off water resulting in filth getting into our coastal zones.''
