GRENADA, Friday January 16, 2009 – The main subject of conversation among the Grenadian populace at this time is the strange lizard-like creature that is currently lurking around the St. George’s Port. It is believed that this creature has been around that area for about two weeks or so and local officials from the Pest Control Unit are yet to capture it and learn more about it. From the time the story broke on local television, there have been many speculations as to the nature of the creature and its origins. Some people are of the belief that it is a young Komodo Dragon, a huge lizard-like creature that has its origins in Komodo – one of the islands making up the Republic of Indonesia. This creature can grow up to an adult size of 9 feet and weigh up to 150 pounds. They take between three to five years to mature and can live for as long as fifty years. Other locals are of the opinion that the creature resembles a Black Iguana, which is endemic to Mexico and South America. Speculation is rife that the creature may have accidentally entered the country from a shipment of wood from South America. The Black Iguana grows up to about four feet in length. Some persons who operate in the vicinity of the port have rumored that there might be more than one of this strange lizard around, however, a top-ranking port official in an interview with the press hinted that there might be only one such animal because no more than one has been seen at any one time. Officials from the Pest and Disease Control Division have set many traps to capture the creature but to date, they have been unsuccessful and the lizard is still at large. Work at the port has been able to continue uninterrupted. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
