Ten Grenadian scholarship recipients were on Sunday 18th January 2009, welcomed into the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program (St. George’s University), when they participated in the symbolic White Coat Ceremony held at Northumbria University located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom. The programme is identical to that offered in Grenada, except that the students receive a one-year experience in the UK and benefit from a different culture. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. John Powell-Jackson, MA, MD, FRCP, Associate Director, Career Guidance and Student Development, United Kingdom, St. George’s University. Dr. Powell-Jackson has a long and distinguished medical career and his main clinical interests are internal and cardiovascular medicine. He has also published articles relating to hypertension and prion diseases. He admonished the students to take their commitment seriously as they entered the medical profession. Together, the students from many countries around the world, recited their professional commitment as they begun their medical education and training as physicians. “I am entering training for a noble profession in which my interest must always be subservient to those who may seek my assistance…….it is a privilege to have been given the opportunity to become a physician; may I be ever conscious of that privilege and never abuse it”. - _ Student Ethics Task Force and Alexander R. Ross, MS, FRCS The High Commissioner for Grenada HE Ms Ruth Elizabeth Rouse, congratulated the students on their achievement thus far and wished them every success in the period ahead.
