GRENADA:- Andy John, a twenty-five year old man from Tempe, St. George’s, was on Friday charged with the attempted daylight robbery of Republic Bank in the area known as ‘Wall Street’, Grand Anse. The incident occurred last week Sunday (January 18). John was charged with possession of three rounds of ammunition, attempting to commit robbery with violence by trying to steal from Republic Bank, intentionally and unlawfully causing damage to the Republic Bank building in the value of $24 and house-breaking by unlawfully entering Republic Bank. The accused was represented by attorney Derrick Sylvester, who made a plea for bail to be granted to his client on the grounds that the constitution makes provisions for a right to bail, that his client was a citizen of Grenada, had no prior convictions and was in need of medical attention. He alleged that John sustained injuries to his head during police interrogation and that he was urinating blood. The Director of Public Prosecution, Christopher Nelson, objected to bail being granted to John on the grounds that Sylvester’s claims could not be substantiated, that investigations into the matter were still ongoing and that a firearm was yet to be retrieved. These, he stated, were indictable matters. The Acting Chief Magistrate Tamara Gill seemed to agree with the DPP and denied bail to Andy John. He was remanded at Her Majesty’s Prison in Richmond Hill awaiting February 12, when preliminary enquiries into the matter commence. In a separate event, John was also charged with housebreaking and stealing phones from the Digicel building on the Carenage valued at $75,440.00. He is represented in this matter by attorney Anslem Clouden. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
