GRENADA’S NEW AMBASSADOR TO THE EUROPEAN UNION PRESENTS...

ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, 28th JANUARY, 2009_ Former Assistant – Professor at the St. George’s University, Stephen Fletcher, is Grenada’s new Ambassador to the European Union (EU). Mr. Fletcher presented his credentials to the EU President – Jose Manuel Barroso in a ceremony at the EU Commission. Prior to meeting with President Barroso, Ambassador Fletcher held brief discussions with the EU Head of Protocol, Jacques de Baenst, and Cristina Calabo, Administrator of the Caribbean Desk. During his meeting with President Barroso, Ambassador Fletcher extended warm “sunshine” greetings from the Government and people of Grenada to the EU President. Ambassador Fletcher said that he regarded his new position as an “opportunity to strengthen Grenada - EU relations which constitute a significant pillar for the socio-economic development of Grenada”. Ambassador Fletcher said he approached his new role with deep optimism and commitment to help build a stronger partnership between Grenada and the European Union. Ambassador Fletcher further noted that his appointment reflects the declared wish of the government and people of Grenada to deepen mutual understanding in this vital and most important partnership. Ambassador Fletcher expressed the Government of Grenada’s sincere appreciation for the assistance provided by the EU over the years and in particular following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. President Barroso wished Ambassador Fletcher a successful tour of duty, and inquired into the state of affairs in Grenada. He also asked Mr. Fletcher to transmit his best wishes to the Prime Minister and Government of Grenada. The meeting also touched on CARICOM integration and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, among other issues. INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
