The island of Petite Martinique will take center stage on Wednesday, February 4th as their parish celebration in recognition of Grenada’s 35th anniversary of independence will be held at the Petite Martinique R.C School while Carriacou celebration takes place the following day at the mini-stadium in Lauriston. Prime Minister the Hon. Tillman Thomas along with Governor General His Excellency Mr. Carlyle Glean will be part of parish celebration. In celebration of Grenada’s 35th anniversary of independence, schools, business places and government buildings in Carriacou and Petite Martinique are beautifully decorated in the national colours. In recognition of the theme, “Celebrating 35 years of Grenadianism” the Harvey Vale Government School and Hillsborough Government showcased different aspect of the island’s rich cultural heritage such as Shakespeare Mas, big drum dancing and the traditional wedding. A number of activities to celebrate to celebrate this milestone, this included an independence road race for the secondary and primary students. In the secondary division Hillsborough Secondary School dominated with Akiba Samerson placing first in the boys category and Kaytana McMillan first in the girls division. Ziggy Stewart of Dover Government School was the outstanding male athlete in the primary division while Bianka Joseph took the first position in the primary girls division. Activities in recognition of Grenada’s 35th anniversary of independence culminates on Saturday, February 7th with a Food Fest on the island of Petite Martinique.
