RGPF EXPRESS CONCERNS ABOUT WALL STREET VENDING
Despite the temporary lifting of the order from the Commissioner of Police, dated January 21st 2009, the general public and all concerned vendors are advised, that with immediate effect all forms of unauthorized public vending at the Wall Street area in Grand Anse St. George’s, would not be permitted. As a result, all vendors wishing to operate at the location during the day and/or at night must immediately secure the required authority and permission from the authorized department of Government. The Office of the Commissioner has directed the operational staff of the Central Division to monitor and effectively enforce the law as it relates to that type of operation. Sitting the increase in criminal activities, anti social behavior and the failure of persons to secure permission to use the location for vending, Commissioner James Clarkson was forced to issue the order. After lengthy dialogue with the vendors, an official from the Ministry of Communications and Works and the Police, permission was granted by the Ministry to allow vending from Friday 30th January to Sunday 1st February 2009 only. Officers of South Police Station had to respond to a bottle throwing incident during the night of Sunday 1st February 2009 that resulted with the front window of one of the businesses at the location being broken. Members of the Criminal Investigation Department are investigating the matter and the persons involved in the altercation are expected to be charged. The original order from the Commissioner of Police was intended to address the vending operations after 6.00pm daily, but this has since been extended to include all vending at the location. Commissioner Clarkson is advising all vendors wishing to operate in the area to obtain the required authority and permission to do so, and also secure the required licenses and certification for their operations. Commissioner Clarkson said, “It is not the responsibility of the RGPF is grant permission to persons to vend, but it is our responsibility to enforce the law and provide a safe environment for all.” The Royal Grenada Police Force looks forward to the understanding and continued co-operation of the general public as we endeavour to serve, and make this nation a safer place.
