CADET CORPS TO BE RE-INTRODUCED |
|
|
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Feb. 3rd (GIS) - The Cadet Corps, once a vibrant part of extra-curricular activities in Grenada, could be making a big comeback through the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF).
The Police Force, which officially established a cadet corps in 2004, has just taken a donation of cadets' uniform from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
The donation of the uniforms is timely since the Cadets will be among uniformed groups at the Independence Day Military Parade on Saturday.
Until the mid-1980s, the cadet corps was an integral part of after-school activities at some of Grenada's leading secondary schools.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Frank Redhead says the RGPF is committed to the revitalisation of the cadet corps within the Police Force.
"The value of a Cadet Corp is significant - certainly from the RGPF perspective with respective to address the challenges of young people in providing the kind of structure that young men need with respect with their own personal development which includes respect, character, and discipline," he said.
Deputy Commissioner Redhead is looking to young people to join the Grenada Cadet Corps.
He says participation in the cadet corps has many values, including teaching young people how to overcome some of the challenges they face.
"The RGPF is very supportive of the Cadet Corp as a means of attempting to solve one of the major challenges in the state which is off course violence and anti social behavior among young men".
Other RGPF officers, including Regimental Sergeant Major Grantley Dick, have welcomed the initiative to reorganize and rebuild the cadet corps.
He describes the unit as having an active and integral role to play in society.
"Cadet Organisations throughout the region is regarded as very important tools in enhancing young people and how well focus they can be".
