A wide cross section of people from all villages in Carriacou turned out at the Lauriston mini-stadium on Thursday, February 5th to celebrate Grenada’s 35th anniversary of independence which for the first time included fireworks display. Minister for Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs Senator, the Hon. George Prime in his first independence address as minister said that as the task of rebuilding the nation continues; citizens need to keep in mind that this nation belongs to all of them. He congratulated the Independence Celebrations Committee led by Linton Lendore for working hard to ensure the event was a success. Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas, in his address said it is important for citizens to remember and recognize the nation’s forefathers who have played a significant role in the early growth and development of the nation. He further stated that it is their vision, dreams, sacrifices and actions that have laid the foundation for our progress. Governor General His Excellency Carlyle Glean told the large gathering that if the tri-island state of Grenada has to continue on a progressive path, citizens must be held accountable for their actions. Adding to the flavor of the celebrations was a contingent of officers from the Special Services Unit who for the first time participated in the military parade on the 13 square miles island. The celebrations which were also attended by Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports & Culture Senator the Hon. Arley Gill and Parliamentary Representative Hon. Elvin Nimrod saw the distribution of awards in a number of areas. Some of the awardees were PC Clifford Charles- most outstanding police officer, Kimberly Quashie-most outstanding female athlete for Bishop’s College and Sherika Patrice for outstanding performance in the 2008 CXC exams.
