GRENADA RECORDS UNEVEN PERFORMANCE IN WORLD BANK'S "DOI...
St. George's, (GIS): Grenada recorded what has been described as an uneven performance in the World Bank's "doing business indicators,'' which are used to measure the ease of doing business in countries. The findings were revealed in a report presented February 10 in St. George's by World Bank officials. The report showed Grenada scored well in areas such as protecting the rights of investors, starting a business and trading across borders. Of 181 economies analyzed by the World Bank, Grenada ranked 84th, which the officials agree is a major achievement for a country its size. World Bank representative, Eva Hamel, praised Grenada for the work it is doing to move ahead on the indicators, which also include registering property, getting credit and closing a business. "Compared to other countries in the OECS and around the world, we can see that Grenada ranks in the middle of the pack,'' Ms. Hamel said. "Some of the recommendations that we have on the indicator is moving business registration toward a one-stop shop.' She also suggested that computerization of records will help eliminate much of the current paper-based records. In the area of the legal rights of borrowers and lenders, Grenada and the rest of the countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States scored a 90 per cent. They failed, however, on the test of "access to credit information,'' with the entire OECS scoring zero. Ms. Hamel blamed the zero rating on the absence of a credit information-sharing system. She said help in this area will be forthcoming with plans for the establishment of a regional credit bureau, and encouraged Grenada to take advantage of it. From GIS INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
