STAKEHOLDERS DELIBERATE ON THE WAY FORWARD FOR CARLTON ...
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, 13th FEBRUARY 2009; Representatives from various stakeholder and other interest groups throughout Grenada and representatives from the Ministry of Health have begun discussions on the way forward for the Carlton House Treatment and Drug Rehabilitation Centre. The consultation at the Grenada Red Cross conference room in St. George’s, addressed the issues of the reconstruction of the facility, a location for the Carlton House, as well as the long term benefits to clients. The meeting also discussed the role of the Ministry of Health and other support services in the proper functioning of the Centre. Minister for Health, Hon. Karl Hood explained that the issue of rebuilding must address the long-term benefits to the clients and to the country. “It should not only be about short term detoxification, but total long term detoxification and how best can we solve the problems that may be associated with drugs and alcoholism”, he told delegates. The meeting is the first in the search for a location for the Carlton House Treatment and Drug Rehabilitation Centre as the advantages and disadvantages associated with all proposed locations are to be discussed. The Minister of Health says he views consulting with stakeholders as “fundamentally important” in decision making. The Carlton House Treatment and Drug Rehabilitation Centre was located at Parade in St. George’s. The building was damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and destroyed by fire the following year.
