GRENADA – The defending champion in the female division of the Intercol games - St. David’s Catholic Secondary School (SDCSS) – staged what can be described as an impressive and exciting sports meeting at the La Sagesse Playing Field in St. David’s on Saturday (February 14, 2009). The sports day commenced with a torch run from the school building to the La sagesse Playing Field. At the sporting venue, the three houses - Bowring (blue), Dowling (red) and Moran (green) – held their march past and then, after the ceremonial opening, the games commenced. The winner of the march past was Moran’s House, followed by Bowring and Dowling. More that two thousand spectators turned out to see the three houses in friendly competition. The athletes from the various houses had the spectators in a highly animated state throughout the sports meeting and there was never a dull moment. At the end of the day, sixteen records were smashed into smithereens. Some of the outstanding athletes who were able to light up the track and ‘work-up’ the large crows into a startling frenzy were: Kade Modestse, who established new records in the boys 100m (10.6 secs), 200m and 400m (22.3 secs) races Yasim Celestine, who also established records in the sub-junior boys 100m (12.21 secs) and the 200m Ashkey Gittens, who equaled the record in the Junior boys 100m (11.3 secs) and established a new record in the boys 200m (22.8 secs) and the 400m. Other athletes who broke records and performed exceptionally well at the games were Nerena Aberdeen, Tasha Charles, Mary Licorish and Nemron Moses, just to name a few. At the end of the sports meeting, Dowling’s House (red) scored a colossal total of 603 points to walk away with the inter-house championship trophy. Bowring’s House (blue) scored 588 points to take the second position and bringing up the rear was Moran’s House (green) with a total of 586 points. The Victor Ludorum was Ashkey Gittens of Bowring’s House and the Victrix Ludorum, Talisha Morain of Moran’s House. André Fletcher, one of the nation’s top cricketers, who happens to be a past student of the St. David’s Catholic Secondary School, was so impressed with the performance of the athletes of his alma mater, that he has decided to provide part sponsorship of the school’s team for the upcoming Intercol games. All eyes are now focused on the Intercol games and the question on the minds of many of the spectators at the sports meeting is whether SDCSS will capture the championship trophies this year in both the male and female divisions. We will just have to wait and see what happens at Intercol 2009. (Photos of the SDCSS sports can be viewed in the PHOTO galleries on this site) INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
