Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas says his decision to announce on Tuesday, the renaming of the Lauriston Airport in Carriacou after former Prime Minister Herbert Blaize was because the decision was made by Cabinet at its Monday, February 23rd, 2009 meeting. The cabinet meeting on which the Prime Minister was reporting to the media, did not discuss the renaming of the Point Saline International Airport. That decision was made at a cabinet meeting months before. It was not the intention of Prime Minister Thomas to withhold information or mislead the Grenadian public. Any name change of the Point Saline International Airport is subject to obligations of notification to international aviation organizations and agencies. The renaming of the Lauriston Airport after former Prime Minister Herbert Blaize does not entail the same international requirements. Prime Minister Thomas noted that Mr. Blaize’s leadership was characterized by honesty and integrity. He managed Grenada through the 1984-1990 period when the island was recovering from the difficulties of the collapsed 1979-1983 Grenada revolution. “Mr. Blaize made a significant contribution to the development of Grenada and has provided leadership at very crucial times in our history. I believe, as a people, we should give recognition to those who have prepared the foundation on which we build today,” Prime Minister Thomas declared.
