MWAG ISSUES PRESS RELEASE ON STATEMENTS MADE BY MINISTE...

The Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) would like to issue a strong reminder to both journalists and politicians of the need to be circumspect in making public comments particularly in light of their capacity to influence thinking and perception. We robustly reaffirm our advocacy that media workers have a duty to continue striving diligently to perform their jobs with the highest degree of responsibility. However, we strongly believe that even in instances when fundamentals are violated by members of the profession the texture and flavor of comments, especially by parliamentarians must be measured. We continue to insist that media practitioners must not just be fair, accurate and balanced in presenting news to the public; but we feel it is also the duty of practitioners to go the extra mile to provide the appropriate context when reporting on issues. If the facts are right but the context is misplaced then the information communicated can be considered misleading since integrity is seriously eroded. Media managers and media houses must also demonstrate a powerful sense of maturity and professionalism by fostering standards that seek to ensure lines of accountability in newsrooms in particular are maintained. In other words, the greater level of responsibility being clamored for must be reflected in our attitude when we are right as well as when we are wrong. On the other hand, we also respect the public and the politician’s right to constructively criticize the media. And while freedom of the press we advocate and freedom of speech we endorse, we feel there is need for us to call on Parliamentarians to exercise prudence in the choice of words used to criticize the press. Our reference is to the comments by the Health Minister Karl Hood that there should be a jail for some journalists. While the tone of those comments did not come across as a threat to press freedom, we hope they are not a reflection of the policy direction of this new Government. While the comments were accurately reported in the media, the story itself was communicated completely out of context, a misrepresentation that can potentially mislead the public. Senior Journalists and parliamentarians attending the session can support this argument since they themselves appreciated the context of the comments. However, the manner in which the comments were communicated caused junior members of the media who were not at the function to voice concern. Seven months after the national poll, they are some who are still waiting for opportunities to exploit the pre-election tension that existed between the press and some politicians. MWAG therefore calls on media practitioners at all levels to conduct themselves within the code of ethics of the profession. From Rawle Titus President, MWAG INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
