MINISTER APOLOGISES TO THE MEDIA
A government minister in Grenada has apologised to the local media fraternity for jokingly suggesting jail time for journalists who practise irresponsible journalism. A statement from the Prime Minister's Office quotes Health Minister Karl Hood as saying his comments were made in jest and not with the intention of criticising media workers in Grenada. The issue stems from a recent media report surrounding the release of members of the so called "Grenada 17" convicted for the 1983 killings of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and several of his cabinet colleagues. The item, which was treated as breaking news, drew criticism from sections of the public after the reporter ended by saying, "If we are wrong, so be it". During a subsequent regional workshop on the media and parliament, Mr. Hood, who is also chairman of the Mercy Committee, not only denied the report but complained that he was not even contacted for a comment by the journalist.
