CHINESE DELEGATION MEETS PRIME MINISTER THOMAS

ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA - Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas on Monday discussed possible increased technical co-operation in the areas of Education, Agriculture and Agro processing with a visiting delegation from the Peoples Republic of China led by the Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, His Excellency Wang Jairu. “These are the areas we see as important to Grenada’s development but we also see the need for increased technical cooperation with China to further develop our capabilities,” the Prime Minister told the delegation. “We have designed a strategy to process our fruits, both for local consumption and for export. We need to strengthen our rural communities to ensure balanced development. This well help with the problem of people moving from the rural areas,” the Prime Minster said, noting that markets for Grenadian products were available in the region and in the Grenadian Diaspora, particularly the United States His Excellency Wang Jairu said China had the capability and was willing to assist with agro-processing, but more discussions were needed to determine the specific requirements. He said the visit, his first to Grenada, was designed to improve relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Thomas and His Excellency Wang discussed a number of global issues including the impact of the financial crisis on both their countries economies. They used the opportunity to voice “the need for a new economic order” in which the concerns of developing countries could be “seriously addressed.” The Chinese Minister sought clarity on several issues, including the region’s discussions on economic and political union. “It will be a good idea for the region to develop a single approach,” His Excellency Wang Jairu said. The Chinese emissary, accompanied by the PRC’s Ambassador to Grenada, extended an invitation to Prime Minister Thomas to Visit Beijing, an invitation Prime Minister Thomas has “gladly accepted.” INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
