REVIEW COMMISSION MET WITH CARRIACOU RESIDENTS TO HEAR ...
Some of the alleged irregularities involving land distribution in Carriacou and Petite Martinique have been brought to the attention of a Review Commission headed by lawyer Carol Bristol, Q.C. Among the cases brought to the notice of the Commission, which recently met at the Sea Wave Upper Level Conference Room, was a situation in which only 59 lots were seen on a master plan for the Belair land Settlement. However, it turns out that somehow a total of 82 persons were given property there. Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Senator the Hon. George Prime, told the meeting that the current government wants to bring a speedy resolution to the land dispute. He also reiterated government’s intention to ensuring that people are treated fairly and within the law. As part of the attempt at finding a quick and reasonable solution, a desk will soon be established in Carriacou to deal with the land distribution issue. The Land Settlement Board will also be reconstituted according to the stipulation laid down in law. Chapter 42 of the Carriacou Land Settlement and Development Act states that the Board shall consist of a chairman and six other members, all of whom shall be appointed by the Minister. Senator Prime, in the meeting with the Bristol-led Review Commission, said there were instances where persons were given approval letters for land, yet their names did not appear on the June 2008 cabinet conclusion. However, he said, there were others whose names appeared on the cabinet conclusion, but there is no documentation to indicate that they had ever applied to receive plots of land in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
