STANDPIPE REDUCTION PROJECT
A project has been initiated by the National Water & Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) to rationalize the number of standpipes throughout Grenada, thereby reducing the wastage of water that occurs at these standpipes. In the past public standpipes were erected in communities where individual households did not all have their own private water supply. These public standpipes were meant to supply potable water to householders for domestic purposes, at the Government’s expense. Over the years there has been an increase in the wastage at these standpipes, whereby persons even connect hoses for a range of activities, such as the washing of vehicles, filling of household water tanks, bathing of animals, watering of domestic gardens etc. In many cases the abuse is carried out by persons from adjoining communities who have their own private domestic connections, and who abuse these standpipes on a regular basis, to the detriment of the householders for whom these pipes were erected. An Assessment has been carried out on standpipes across the nation, to examine the type of usage and activity at the respective locations. Those identified as being abused have been scheduled for removal, provided that the householders within a three-quarter mile radius of the standpipes do not depend on the standpipes for their primary water supply. With the dry season upon us, this project is being expedited immediately in order to reduce the wastage at these standpipes, thus making a more adequate supply available to other consumers and their respective premises. Accordingly, representatives from the Authority will be at work effective Monday March 23, 2009 to disconnect a number of standpipes throughout the island that meet the criteria. Any queries or concerns members of the public may have as it relates to this project may be directed to NAWASA’s Main Office by calling 440-2155 Ext 286. STANDPIPE REDUCTION PROJECT
Dear NAWASA, With the respect to the removal of stand pipe in communities that can lease afford water; it seems to defy common sense. It would be more beneficial to address the problem rather than the symptoms. There is a judiciary system in Grenada. If people are breaking the law, Nawasa, in collaboration with law enforcement should impose severe financial penalties on the culprits to discourage those abusive activities. The removal of the stand pipes wouldn’t stop those abusers from getting water from other sources. I’m sure they’ll find some ways to by-pass your meters and get water illegally and you’re back to square one. Attack the behavior of those responsible for the action, not the result of their action. Best wishes, Andrew
