SAASS SHINES AT NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPS

GRENADA - Over the weekend (March 14 – 15), the athletes from the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (S.A.A.S.S) – the defending champion in the male division of the INTERCOL games – gave the people of the nation a glimpse of what is in store for the 2009 INTERCOL games during the National Junior Champs meeting at the Grenada Athletics Stadium. The school was able to amass the most points in the male category and was second to the St. David’s Christian Secondary School in terms of an over-all points tally (male and female combined). Based on the performance of the various secondary schools at the weekend sports meeting, it is quite obvious that this year’s INTERCOL will be one saturated with entertainment and excitement. S.A.A.S.S competed against other schools and clubs over the weekend and was able to obtain a number of medals in various events. Some of the outstanding performances came from the following athletes: BOYS: Emron Gibbs 1st place in Javelin (Under 20) Arnold Pierre 2nd place in Long Jump (Under 17) Brandon Durham 1st place in 800 meters (Under 20) Kevon Tyson 3rd place in 100 meters (Under 17) Che` Mason 1st place in 400 meters (Under 17) Arnold Pierre 1st place in High Jump (Under 17) Kerry Lewis 2nd place in Long Jump (Under 20) Donnel Modeste 3rd place in Long Jump (Under 20) Arnold Pierre 3rd place in Javelin (Under 17) Delon Joseph 3rd place in Discuss (Under 20) Donnel Modeste 2nd place in Triple Jump (Under 20) Kerry Lewis 3rd place in Triple Jump (Under 20) Arnold Pierre 1st place in Triple Jump (Under 17) Che Mason 1st place in 800 meters (Under 17) The Boys’ Team also picked up medals in the following track events: 4 x 100 meters for Under 17 Boys (1st place) 4 x 400 meters open for Boys (1st place) GIRLS: Marsha Thomas 1st place in 100 meters (Under 15) Marsha Thomas 1st place in 400 meters (Under 15) Nickhelia John 1st place in 400 meters (Under 17) Marsha Thomas 1st place in 200 meters (Under 15) Nickhelia John 1st place in 200 meters (Under 15) Patricia Williams 1st place in Shot Put (under 17) Jade Rennie 2nd place in Long Jump (Under 17) The Girls’ Team also performed well in the relays obtaining medals in the following races: 4 x 100 meters for Under 15 Girls (1st place) 4 x 100 meters for Under 17 Girls (3rd place) 4 x 400 meters Open for Girls (2nd place) The athletes from the school are presently engaged in intense training under the eyes of the coaching staff at S.A.A.S.S headed by Vice Principal Mr. Job Alexander, who happens to be one of the most experienced coaches on the island.
