WORLD WATER DAY 2009
The National Water & Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) will be observing World Water Day on Sunday March 22, 2009 under the theme “Transboundary – Making Water Conservation a Way of Life”. The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly designated 22nd March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution. This world day for water was to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development contained in chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21. Nations were invited to devote the Day to implement the UN recommendations and set up concrete activities as deemed appropriate in the national context. A week of activities has been organized by NAWASA which will begin on World Water Day, Sunday March 22, 2009 with a television address by Mr. Christopher Husbands, General Manager of the Authority. Thereafter other activities will include: • Visits to selected schools across the island on Monday March 23rd and Tuesday March 24, 2009 to speak with students from grades four to six. • Public Awareness Session at Melville Street Fish Market Parking Lot on Thursday March 26, 2009 with the participation of various Agencies and Ministries. • Customer Appreciation Day on Friday March 27, 2009. Disconnected customers have not been left out as they are being given the opportunity to come into any NAWASA Cash Office, and pay a percentage of their arrears (40% for first timers and 50% otherwise), organize a payment plan with the Revenue Unit and they will have their supply reconnected without the payment of a reconnection fee. The entire objective of this week of activities is to sensitize the populace on the importance of making water conservation apart of everyday lives. Everyone can make a difference by ensuring that all pipes are Turned Off and Kept Off when not in use. FROM: NAWASA INSIDE GRENADA NEWS
